“We sped through The Bronx, an urban maze of abandoned warehouses, half-empty row homes, vacant lots, and beautiful graffiti. So high are the highways through places like this; you get to see the  morass and decay and degradation flash by you like a film reel, but you  coast above it as if from the silver lining of a dark cloud stretching  to Connecticut, and you leave the place untouched, unscathed, and  unaware of the real world below.  When there’s traffic you peek out with  disdain; when it’s smooth sailing you get through like a bat out of  hell.  Either way you miss the culture, the wonder, the simplicity, and  the surprising amount of beauty here.”
